During the 2020 Spring Festival holiday, I painted my first self-portrait as a winter break assignment. I started learning oil painting portraits since April 2019, and I found that painting portraits is much more difficult compared to landscapes and still life. At the beginning of my learning, I painted by looking at photos in the studio. After reaching a certain stage, I became very curious and eager to try "life painting" of portraits! My teacher suggested that I paint a self-portrait by looking in the mirror, which would save the trouble of finding models. So I started my first self-portrait assignment.

Later on, I noticed that Rembrandt also painted a lot of self-portraits, and it was quite interesting to see his aging process through self-portraits from different periods.

When I started preparing for it, I found it was not easy. First of all, I needed a suitable mirror. The first time, I used a small mirror in the wardrobe, which had a limited view. So I decided to draw myself in a 6F size. I didn't spend too much time on my hair and clothes on my shoulders, but focused on the expression on my face. For the lighting, I didn't use any special lighting equipment, just relied on a lamp on the ceiling of the room. I tried my best to find an angle that minimized the shadow area on my face. Finally, when I found a good angle, the next challenge was to start sketching. Since I had to look at myself in the mirror for a moment and then immediately turn back to the canvas to draw, I couldn't maintain the same position for a long time. I could only use the position of light and shadow on my face to locate myself and make sure that I could return to the original angle after moving.

This time I finally had a large mirror in the foyer, and I also took more photos of the painting process.

Above are the three self-portraits I've painted over the past four years! I'll probably paint a self-portrait every two or three years in the future to review my progress. Next time, I'd like to try my hand at portrait sketching!

Have you ever tried drawing a self-portrait? What were the challenges you faced during the process? Leave a comment and let me know!
